I have no hesitation in naming Gears 5 on Xbox One as a triumph. The story is amazing, the multiplayer works perfectly, and Horde and Escape are the cherries on the cake.

Gears 5 is incredible, a true renaissance for the series. The changes made to campaign are exactly what I wanted the series to be. The multiplayer suite has something for everyone. This is just an incredible package that deserves its praises.

It is much smaller compared to other games, so it doesn’t feel overdone and fits the game nicely. I found it natural and cool to see landmarks along the way and hear Del or Kait say “let’s check this out,” leading to side quests. Landmarks don’t appear on your map until you pass by them, which rewards exploration. Another improvement to the series is the evolution of Jack. He can now aid in combat (and is playable in co-op) and can be upgraded with components. His abilities are game changing and will have you exploring every nook and cranny for components.An issue I have is the execution of the story feels off. The game basically contains 2 stories in one. The “Gears story” has you trying to get the HoD to function again, while Kait’s story continues from Gears 4. The “Gears story” can be redundant and some moments feel unnecessary, while I wished Kate’s story was slightly longer. Even worse, it fells disjointed as it seems to take turns telling each story. I will admit there are small details I missed, that I have noticed on a second playthrough. But, I feel Kait’s story should’ve been towards the end or the ending itself.This game has me excited to play the next entry in the series, yet again. Between the fun multiplayer, great campaign, and as a technical showcase, this game is a complete package.

The Coalition has gone all out to create one of the best Xbox Series X launch titles, which is both great and sad about the state of things. It’s no system seller like a Gears game should be, but it allows those who experienced it last year to marvel in its glory once more and introduce new players to the world of Sera in the most vibrant way possible.

Gears 5 is an odd thing; it's neither a grand leap forwards, nor a complete rehash of what came before, and therefore sits somewhere in the middle of the two. On the whole, the improvements do outweigh the negatives (the non-linear approach to campaign levels and the small changes to horde mode being some of the most notable), and while The Coalition still has some work to do to really make the series its own, this is a far bolder and more varied approach the relatively safe Gears 4. If you love shooters and you want a good place to jump back into the series, this is perfect place to work the rust out of your lancer.

I also enjoy the ingenuity of the different types of guns, even though I usually just stuck with my trusty lancer and gnasher. Where it fell flat was that the game just got a bit.. boring - no massive 'omg' moments in it - it felt like it was still all the same enemies im mowing down from 2007.In fact when the game really started ramping up with actual stakes and a step up in gameplay along with a fun boss battle - the game came to surprising conclusion. Just as it was getting different and really good, it ended. A shame, but its still worth playing.

It's just another Gears game, but a more charismatic protagonist and a few experimental mechanics at least give the series a more firm footing going forward.

Any Gears of War fan should definitely take Gears 5 for a spin if they really want to test the power of their new hardware but may feel somewhat let down by the campaign mode if they are huge fans of the initial trilogy.
