Perhaps the best way to describe Borderlands 3 is to say it is exactly the game you would expect it to be. There are plenty of familiar faces, and it has the same sort of ambiance and atmosphere. People will still keep going into quest after quest for the same reasons (loot). While it might be difficult to accept the new villains after a great one like Handsome Jack, the twins are fine. Most importantly, the new Vault Hunters work well and the game is as fun to play alone as it is with friends. It looks, works, and plays well, and fans of the series will be more than happy to join the Crimson Raiders.

Borderlands 3 may be a brain-dead story of already dead on arrival memes and a cast that is largely forgettable (Save for Tannis, I still love you for being my socially inept spirit animal), but it’s easily the most satisfying power fantasy of the year thanks to its amazingly tuned gunplay and a sophisticated flow of action that picks up the juvenile slack.

Borderlands 3 is, quite simply, more Borderlands. That means excessive charming humor, great variety in environments and sidequests and a lot of fun coop action spread throughout. Borderlands 3 is a great game, but it’s definitely got some technical issues with sadly brings the score down a bit. While my issues weren’t as bad as others I’ve heard about, they’re still annoying at times. However, if you can get past that you’ll find a game that’s more of the same as previous games (especially 2 and pre-sequel), but that’s what made Borderlands great to start with. A great story, reuniting with old friends, and some pretty interesting villains ensures I’ll be coming back to open any more vaults that are found on any planet Gearbox wishes to travel to.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Borderlands 3 is as safe as sequels come. Its gunplay has hardly changed at all and the humour remains as polarizing as ever, but the package in its entirety works. It’s fast, satisfying and constantly addictive as you hoover up new guns and grow your selection of badass vault hunters.

The combat feels fun and varied, a big plus too with how varied the playable characters are.Negatives: The writing, characters, and storytelling compared to Borderlands 2 leaves a lot to be desired. The main villains being what are essentially evil psychotic twitch streamers could have been handled a lot better than it actually was, and instead they come off as characters who I want to kill just to shut them up and not because they're evil and despicable like Handsome Jack was in BL2. Additionally the sidequests, while being pretty fun and imaginative in BL2, were bland and felt very same-y in the newest entry, to the point that I just stopped doing them. The general writing of the game has taken a bit of a nosedive from "amazing" to "adequate". I laughed a lot through the many playthroughs I had in BL2, but I almost don't want to make a new character in BL3 simply from how much I cringed at the dialogue.It's a lot more fun when you have a friend to play with (aka someone to cringe at the dialogue alongside), but this is where I noticed a number of other issues too. In local co-op the writing is simply too small to read unless you have a large TV, something which I do not play my PS5 on simply for convenience reasons and due to it being a part of a general gaming setup. The writing is so small in fact that I had to turn up the subtitles to max size and even then had to lean forward to read some of the other text. Small visual glitches also popped up during a local co-op playthrough, where the corner of my friend's side of the screen would warp to a pixelated black behind the ammo counter if facing a certain direction, but only on Promethea thus far. While not a game-ruining thing, it's certainly caused a bit of confusion.Overall, the game is pretty good as a looter shooter, but it doesn't necessarily feel like the Borderlands I'm used to. The gameplay salvages what would otherwise be a mediocre game, and the choice of playing it with friends also alleviates some of the issues I have with the game. Though, the writing is still pretty bad and can get on one's nerves very quickly. I haven't got anything to say about the DLCs as I haven't gotten any of them and probably won't.

But, the problem is that the game world feels lifeless and empty. The game is divided into small areas with loading between each zone (who even does this in 2021? This mechanic belongs to the PS2 era). Because of this, the map system is very frustrating, since you need to navigate to fast travel A LOT between the small areas.Kudos for implementing a 120hz mode, even though the game seem poorly optimized (The resolution drop is just not worth it). In 60fps mode, the game starts struggling when increasing the FOV (Default:75). Real fps probably between 45-50. I think with this kind of cel shaded cartoonish style, this game could've been ran much better on the XSX.This is one of those games that still works because of creative people behind it. But when you start playing you're constantly reminded that this game still feels stuck in the PS2/early PS3 era (except for the increased resolution in quality mode). Can only recommend if you're a huge Borderlands fan.I'd really dig this game if gearbox would've:- Created a seamless open world instead of small areas with loading between (That would fix the map frustrations as well)- Optimized the game better on consoles- Made the world more interesting, more NPCs, interactions, generally add stuff to make the world more life like.- Improved upon the driving of vehicles (feels archaic)

Horizontal split screen should be outlawed, it's horrible, the fonts are so small as to be illegible without sitting way too close to the TV and the lag in big fights or when accessing menus is awful! I'm not ditching the game as I expect patches will improve most of it over time, but they really need to add vertical split to the co-op.

After 3 patches on the XBOX series X, the game still crashed like 7 times and freeze my console twice to the point that I had to do a hard Reset.i finally finished this broken game. Not only the story is terrible bad, like most of the characters, are unlikeable and flat, but they also ruined the BL2 characters they have no roll in the history and they personalities feel off as if they are not important anymore. If you want true BL2 sequel you most likely not founded here nor in the over $99 of DLC and season passes. Is is really ashame since the "gun-play" is still very solid but you can't skip the awful in-game cutscenes or the faceless final of the story which is a complete rip-off of the iron giant/reckit ralph, I don't know what when wrong when supervising the story but it was like watching a tv show from the 80s but like bad 80s shows not the good one.

Gearbox is at their best when they’re engineering the act of shooting something. If their game would just shut up and let the gleeful gunplay speak for itself, Borderlands would go a lot further. Instead, the gunplay is clogged up with meaningless loot, smugly unfunny jokes, and lots of using the same ol’ gun while waiting for the parsimonious skill point drip to finally drop. Where’s the glee in all that?
